Customer Reviews about Oakland Police Department:

  • I'm impress by the new Oakland CHief of Police. Engaging the citizens is the first step in making inprovements. Be tenacious, walk-the-talk, volunteer in community. I'm a third generation SoBay resident, business owner, neighborhood watch participant and single-parent. In addition, I'm enrolled in the SCPD CPA (Santa Clara Police Dept, Citizen's Police Academy). I'm in the second of thirteen classes. It's an eye opening experience. I challenge the new Chief and the Oakland residents (yes, that's you) to take a look at this program and implement it in your city. Keep in mind: When your up to your ass in alligators it's tough to remember your original objective was to drain the swamp. Deb

  • Responded within a reasonable amount of time for a non emergency situation. The officers were very friendly and very helpful. To all the officers, thank you for your service!

  • In recent years, the department and the City of Oakland has undergone sweeping changes both in-house as well as outwardly.  From scandals, excessive force, over-site monitors, reorganization of command staff, to accusations of "nepotism" from a former city manager, the stress has taken its toll on moral to the "line officers (patrol)", and most significantly to the community in which we serve.   The department was once a "proactive department" where officers initiated their daily activities in addressing crime.  Now with the loss of officers, the department has taken the "reactive mode" where it's just answering "call to call to call."  This unfortunate delay resulted in slower response times to "in progress" calls, to reports of burglaries and thefts after the fact.  I don't think no one can feel the communities' frustrations as the responding officer who is assigned that call. I can't count how many times "independent" studies have established that the City of Oakland require @ least 1000+ officers to appropriately handle the calls of service, only to be disregarded by the city over the years (typical).  Before cuts to the department (820+) crime was essentially down.  The department had crime reduction units, gang units along with other specialized units to handle the problems associated with a city of this size.  The best part, little or no overtime required.   When the city in all its "wisdom" decided to eliminate 200 positions in the department to a low of 620 officers (recent figures), OPD had to cut specialized units, which resulted in the increase of crime exponentially.  "The knuckleheads of this city were well cognizant of this transformation and took advantage of this deficit."  Money saved was apportioned to the prettification of downtown Oakland, but what good did that do if crime rates soared!? I have never heard of so many complaints (most legitimate while others are frivolous) from the citizens of Oakland because the police response was to slow, didn't take a report, or couldn't wait for an officer to respond.  The big one was "my child" didn't commit the crime all too frequently from people not being responsible.  "Parent's need to take responsibility for their children's actions and not let the community as a whole, assume that role." Like in all industries, establishments, there will always be the "few" who undoubtedly will tarnish the reputations that others have worked so hard at and police departments are no exceptions.  Actually, they stand out in the public eye because we serve the community.  You never hear of the employee being disciplined for unscrupulous behavior at commercial companies, but you will with any police agency because of their profession.  I'm not going to get into specifics but regrettably every department has its bad apples, ours is no exception.  When an officer goes bad, it's a "black eye for officers nationwide." We have many great citizens in this city who have worked hard and come together as a community.  Two of those examples were the "Oakland Hills Fire Storm (1991) & The Great Earth Quake (1989)."  I worked 12hr plus during those initial days trying to extricate victims of both the earthquake and Oakland hills fire.  People from all around the communities supported us during this chaotic and tragic time and we all came out together better for the experience. There are those who feel that police officers have no emotions but we bleed red like everyone else.  I've been shot, shot at, suffered broken bones, and had my share of "ambulance rides to the emergency room."  But nothing was harder, than for me to have to attend the funerals of officers who I have personally known, trained, or worked closely with over the years and to this day, their faces are still vivid in my mind. I don't think a rating is appropriate in this case but my "5 stars" are in memory to all officers who have "given so much, so that others may live!"  "We have our flaws, but my hat goes off to those who have served the citizens of this great country!"
